šŸ“Š Poll

Last week, I asked: Do you pay for iCloud storage?

Here are some of my favorite replies:

Yes - ā€œI relied on One Drive for backing up all my files and in June tried opening some files only to discover all my files from December to June were gone and there was no way to recover them. While iCloud isnā€™t as convenient since it doesnā€™t automatically backup files, at least I know I have all my files when I need them.ā€

No - ā€œThe convenience is there, but I don't really want to rely on a cloud service to store my files. To me, the local storage my devices have are enough, but I would understand why someone would want to use a cloud service.ā€

šŸ„³ The iPhone 16 Event is Official!

Apple has officially announced its Fall iPhone event, Itā€™s Glowtime. Here are the details you need to know.

  • The event takes place on Monday, September 9th at 1pm EST.

  • Apple will be unveiling the new iPhone 16 lineup, along with new models for the Apple Watch, including the Series 10, Ultra, and SE.

  • Theyā€™re expected to unveil two new models of AirPods 4, one being a higher-end model with Active Noise Cancellation.

  • And we just recently learned that Apple could be announcing a new iPad mini! This will likely only be a spec bump to gain Apple Intelligence compatibility.

  • Iā€™d expect the focus of this event to be on Apple Intelligence and how it makes the new products better. That will likely be the main selling point for the iPhone 16 lineup, aside from the Capture Button.

  • I made a video detailing everything to expect at the event.

  • You can prep for the iPhone 16 event with some beautiful Glowtime wallpapers for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

My take: While we know (almost) everything coming at this event, Apple always has surprises up its sleeve. So make sure to join me in the live reaction stream on the 9th!

Fun fact: This is the first time ever that Apple has hosted an iPhone launch event on a Monday! Itā€™s likely due to the presidential debate on Tuesday, so Iā€™d expect pre-orders to fall on the same day as usual - Friday.

šŸŖ„ Appleā€™s New AI Features

This week, Apple released iOS 18.1 Beta 3 and it contains two new Apple Intelligence features. Here are the details.

Clean Up

  • This feature is baked into the Photos application and uses Apple Intelligence to remove distracting people or objects from the background of photos.

  • The feature works best when the background distraction isn't touching/directly behind the subject. When too close, it struggles and removes part of the subject.

  • The reason it erases part of the subject in some cases, is because it uses content-aware fill, not generative fill.

ā€œApple is Lateā€

  • This feature has gone viral on social media, with many pointing to the fact that Samsung and Pixel phones have had this feature for years and that it works far better.

  • That is true. This is uncharted territory for Apple, so itā€™s no surprise that its first Beta deployment isnā€™t perfect.

  • Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggests that Clean Up could be given a ā€œbetaā€ label in the Photos app, if it even ships with the public release of iOS 18.1 in October.

  • Despite being a first beta, itā€™s worked well for me so far. Thereā€™s still room for improvement, and Iā€™m hopeful that generative fill will be added in future updates.

Summarized Notifications

  • This new Beta also introduces Summarized Notifications for all applications, not just Mail and Messages!

  • If you receive more than 1 notification from the same app, Apple Intelligence will summarize those notifications so you donā€™t have to read each and every one.

  • I made a full video showcasing these features in action, along with a video on iOS 18 Beta 8.

My take: The Apple Intelligence features continue to impress and we still have several additional features coming over the next year! Thoughts on these new additions?

šŸ¤Ø iPhone 17 Rumors

MacRumors

The iPhone 16 isnā€™t even out yet and we have a couple of new details on next yearā€™s iPhone 17 Pro Max.

  • The iPhone 17 Pro Max (or ā€œUltraā€) will have 12GB of RAM for enhanced on-device Apple Intelligence capabilities.

  • All other iPhone 17 models, along with the iPhone SE 4, will allegedly stick with 8GB of RAM.

  • The highest-end model will also have an upgraded cooling system with vapor chamber (VC) technology! All other models will continue to use graphite sheets for thermal management.

  • The 120Hz "ProMotion" display is also expected to come to all models starting with the iPhone 17.

My take: 12GB of RAM is cool and all, but Iā€™m more excited for the thermal upgrades. A new vapor chamber thermal system would be huge for the iPhone!

Also, this is a great time to mention this: If you were planning on getting an iPhone 16 or 16 Pro Max, get it. Donā€™t hold off on buying a phone because of what ā€œmight comeā€ next year. Itā€™s an endless game. Buy what you want when you want it.
