Siri 2.0: 2025

the wait continues.

āš™ļø Siri 2.0: 2025

During WWDC, Apple made it clear that some of the Apple Intelligence features wouldnā€™t arrive until 2025. Now we have more details.

  • The revamped version of Siri is set to be released in iOS 18.4, a software update coming around Spring 2025.

  • If youā€™re a Beta tester, youā€™ll be able to test Siri 2.0 starting in January.

  • This upgraded Siri will be able to understand on-screen context and have precise control over actions inside Appleā€™s apps.

  • The good news is: the new Siri UI and the ChatGPT integration will be coming later this year.

  • Weā€™re also still expecting Genmoji, Writing Tools, Priority Notifications, and the other AI features later this year.

  • The Apple Watch Series 10 & Ultra 3 will get a new processor this year that could "lay the groundwork for some AI enhancements down the road," but it will not run Apple Intelligence and there are currently no plans to bring "the full initiative" to Apple Watch.

Update (November 2024): iOS 18.1 is out now and gives us a look at the improved Siri. Itā€™s not quite Siri 2.0 just yet, but hereā€™s what has been added (via MR):

  • There's a new glow around the edges of the display when Siri is activated, applicable to ā€ŒiPhoneā€Œ, ā€ŒiPadā€Œ, and CarPlay. On Mac, the ā€ŒSiriā€Œ window can be placed anywhere. The glow animates responsively to the sound of your voice so you can tell when ā€ŒSiriā€Œ is listening without interrupting other things you're doing.

  • A double tap at the bottom of the display brings up the Type to ā€ŒSiriā€Œ interface so you can type requests instead of speaking them. On Mac, you need to press the Command key twice to bring up Type to ā€ŒSiriā€Œ. Type to ā€ŒSiriā€Œ includes suggested requests so you can get your questions answered faster.

  • ā€ŒSiriā€Œ can maintain context between requests so you can ask a question and then reference it in a second reply. If you ask about the temperature in Raleigh, for example, and then follow up with "what's the humidity?" ā€ŒSiriā€Œ should know you mean in Raleigh.

  • If you stumble over your words when speaking to ā€ŒSiriā€Œ, or change what you're saying mid-sentence, ā€ŒSiriā€Œ will follow along.

  • ā€ŒSiriā€Œ has Apple's product knowledge and support base for answering questions about your device's features and settings, and can even find settings when you don't know the exact name by using natural language search.

Siri will get even more improvements" when iOS 18.2 gets released in December, as ChatGPT will be integrated into Siri. This will allow you to get answers for queries that Siri canā€™t answer.

But of course the biggest improvements will come with iOS 18.4 in the Spring, where weā€™ll actually see Siri 2.0. This will include support for on-screen awareness, app integration, personal context for more personalizes responses, and more.

šŸ’» Mac Users Arenā€™t Upgrading Anymore

Mac Oā€™Clock Medium

Ever since Apple introduced the M1 chip in 2020, Mac customers have held on to their laptops/desktops for longer periods than in previous years. But itā€™s not just because of the M1 chip. Hereā€™s what the data shows.

  • Over the past 12 months, 71% of iPhone owners and 68% of Mac owners reported that their previous device was 2+ years old.

  • In 2020, those numbers were 63% and 59%, respectively.

  • In 2024, 56% of Mac customers held onto their computers for 3+ years, a major increase from 40% in 2020!

Age of previous Mac for Apple customers buying a new Mac

Your first instinct is to think that the M1 chip is still ā€œenoughā€ for most people. And it is. But thatā€™s not the only reason weā€™ve seen a sharp increase in the percentage of ā€ŒMac users whose previous device was older than 2 years.

  • Bloomberg theorizes that the reasoning is also due to: fewer significant features in new models, improved durability and reliability of devices, changing user needs, and the increased use of streaming services & web-based applications.

  • COVID-19 also played a role in this shift. Everyone had to buy computers for work-from-home but after that, there were economic & job uncertainties, so people were smarter with their spending.

My take: I believe the two biggest reasons people arenā€™t upgrading their Macs as often are:

  1. The rise of web/cloud-based apps. Apps like Figma, Canva, Notion, WebFlow, etc arenā€™t eating away at your CPU/GPU as much as standalone applications would. So, an M1 machine will likely still be powerful enough for daily tasks.

  2. People are smarter now than they were pre-2020. Covid woke everybody up in terms of what you need versus what you want. Personal finance is now more prevalent and I think that also played a role in all tech purchases, not just with Apple. Thoughts?
