How To Use S-GPT, The Most Powerful iPhone Shortcut

S-GPT integrates ChatGPT with native iOS functions & it's game-changing!

You canā€™t go anywhere on the internet in 2023 without hearing about ChatGPT and AI.

Over the past few months, there have been several Siri Shortcuts created in order to ā€œreplaceā€ Siri on the iPhone with ChatGPT.

And while those shortcuts are cool, I found it easier to just use ChatGPT in my browser. Itā€™s not like the Shortcut offered any advantage other than using Siri to access it.

ButĀ now, we have aĀ game changer. A Shortcut that integrates ChatGPT with native iOS functions - and the result is simply incredible!

Itā€™s called S-GPT and it comes from Federico Viticci. Hereā€™s how to set it up and use it.

Sign up for the upcoming course below and you will be notified when it goes live. It will be an extensive, paid course with live Q&A.

Set Up

  1. Go to the OpenAI website & create an account or log in

  2. Go to Account > Billing Info

  3. Enter your billing info and sign up for the pay-as-you-go plan

  4. Click ā€œUsage Limitsā€

  5. Set Hard & Soft Limits (Mine are set to $3 and $2 - meaning I will not spend more than $3/mo)

  6. Go to the API Reference page

  7. Create an API key & copy it

  8. Download the S-GPT Shortcut

  9. Input your API key into the interface when asked

  10. Download the S-GPT Encoder Shortcut (required)

I prefer the app on my Home Screen and you might also. To do that: go into the Shortcuts app, go to the S-GPT Shortcut, and tap the Share icon in the bottom right. Then tap ā€œAdd to Home Screenā€

Now when you tap the S-GPT icon on your Home Screen, just use the iOS dictation feature (mic icon in bottom right of keyboard) to run your queries. Itā€™s much quicker than typing everything out.

You can also access the shortcut via Siri by just simply saying ā€œSGPTā€, although I find that to be much less intuitive.

Triggers

So for the native iOS functions to work together with ChatGPT, we need to use the ā€œtrigger wordsā€ that were set up in the S-GPT Encoder shortcut.

They are as follows:

Clipboard - If you ask S-GPT to do anything with text in the clipboard, ChatGPT will process the contents of your system clipboard. Try asking ā€œCheck my clipboard for grammar mistakesā€ or ā€œSummarize whatā€™s in the clipboardā€

My Schedule - S-GPT can look at your upcoming schedule and tell you which days are too busy with the help of ChatGPT. Try asking ā€œHelp me with my scheduleā€.

Live Text - You can use S-GPT to summarize text extracted from any image in your photo library via Appleā€™s Live Text technology. Your photo will not be sent to OpenAI ā€“ just the text extracted from it locally, on-device. Try asking ā€œUse Live Text.ā€

Playlist - This is the big one: S-GPT can make a playlist in Appleā€™s Music app for any list of songs returned by ChatGPT. As long as thereā€™s a list of songs provided by S-GPT, you can ask it to turn it into a playlist and youā€™ll end up with a brand new, actual playlist in the Music app. Try asking ā€œMake me a playlist with 10 emo songs from the late 2000sā€ or ā€œI want a playlist with the top 15 songs by the members of boygeniusā€.

You may notice that not all songs returned by ChatGPT can be added to a playlist. Unfortunately, this is due to Appleā€™s non-existent implementation of Apple Music search in Shortcuts. The Shortcuts app doesnā€™t have a real ā€˜Search on Apple Musicā€™ action; instead, I have to use an iTunes Store search action, which is often unreliable. I hope weā€™ll see native Apple Music search actions in iOS 17.

Note from Viticci

More triggers will be added in future updates but if you are tech/Shortcuts savvy, you can add your own triggers into the shortcut by dissecting the S-GPT Encoder.

Examples

Here are some of the triggers I like to use at the moment. And I will add on to this with time, as I become more fluent with S-GPT.

  • Give me a detailed summary of the articles linked in my clipboard. Keep it between 200-300 words for each article.

  • Check my clipboard for grammar mistakes. Provide a list of mistakes, annotate them, and tell me how to fix them.

  • Export Chat

  • Make a playlist for working out. Put an emphasis on hip-hop music

  • Help me with my schedule this week

  • In Safari, go to the Share Sheet > S-GPT and it will automatically summarize the current article

  • (continuously adding to this list..)
