🫣 Apple’s Unprecedented Leak
Wylsacom/YouTube
Apple is set to launch new M4 Macs next month, but due to an alleged warehouse leak, some already have their hands on it.
Photos of the alleged M4 MacBook Pro have been posted online for the past few weeks, but now we have unboxing videos from major YouTubers.
Russian YouTube creator Wylsacom, who has 11 million subscribers, made a 13-minute unboxing video on the upcoming M4 MacBook Pro.
Gurman also chimed in to say it seems legit.
One day later, another Russian YouTuber made a short video unboxing the same, alleged base-model M4 MacBook Pro. He even showed the "About This Mac" menu.
The videos show a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4, a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a Space Black finish.
We also now know that the M4 MBP will support 2 external displays with the lid open.
When is the Official Launch?
MacRumors
According to Bloomberg, the M4 Macs are expected to launch on Friday, November 1st.
These Macs still include the 14-inch MacBook Pro, a higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, a redesigned Mac mini, and an M4 iMac.
Gurman also expects a refreshed iPad mini to launch in early November.
Meanwhile, the M4 Mac Studio and Mac Pro aren’t expected until 2025.
If there were to be an Apple Event in October, we’d likely see invites go out within the next two weeks.
iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 will allegedly launch on October 28th, leading us to further believe the new Macs will release on the 1st.
My take: This might be the worst product leak for Apple since the iconic iPhone 4 prototype that was left at a bar in California in 2010. This never happens with Apple and I hope we get a backstory on how it happened. To make matters worse, these leaked M4 MacBooks can allegedly be bought on Russian classified sites. Unheard of!
Regardless, I’m looking forward to the M4 Macs, especially the new M4 & M4 Pro Mac mini with the redesign!
🍎 Change of Plans
Bloomberg
Apple is planning to move away from its annual product upgrade cycle, a move that has been discussed for years. Here are the details.
For many years, Apple has stuck to the same schedule:
New software gets announced in June at WWDC.
New hardware gets announced and released alongside the new software in September & October.
This could change soon and Apple Intelligence is partially to blame, due to the delayed release & not launching alongside the iPhone 16’s.
Apple’s recent software blunders also prove that the increasing number of products and software makes it difficult to stick to a pre-determined schedule.
Apple is still expected to maintain its yearly iPhone release, but other products will receive less frequent updates.
We’ve seen this recently, such as the Apple Watch Ultra 2 only getting a new Black color this year instead of a new model. Or the lack of a new Apple Watch SE, which now appears to be on a 3-year update cycle.
Looking Ahead
In 2025, Gurman predicts that Macs, iPads, and other devices will be released at different times, independent of traditional events like WWDC and the iPhone launch.
This staggered release strategy could encourage more innovation and more people to upgrade, since the differences between models will be more substantial. It will also make Apple’s product plans less predictable, something Apple loves to be.
My take: I’m a fan of this new strategy. I like unpredictable Apple. But I’m not so sure this will lead to more innovation.
I do think the upgrades will be more substantial year-over-year but since this strategy doesn’t apply to the annual iPhone release, I don’t think it' will change the trajectory of innovation for Apple’s products.
Still, this will be fun to watch unfold starting next year!
