šŸ“Š Poll

Last week, we asked: Would you buy an Apple home security camera?

Here were my favorite replies:

Yes - ā€œI would love to have a fully integrated Apple home system where I wouldnā€™t have to use any anything but Apple services and products so all tech items that could be connected, managed, and viewed were through native Apple products, instead of the Frankenstein system using third party products for this and that.ā€

No - ā€œWhile I appreciate that Appleā€™s motto is basically protecting privacy, I donā€™t know if I would want that much involvement from it. Yes I am very deep into the Apple ecosystem, but for whatever reason this seems a little too much.ā€

This week: Would you buy an Apple-branded TV? Why or why not? More on this later.

šŸŽ A Big Change to Siri is Coming

Apple

When Apple Intelligence was unveiled in June, we heard all about Appleā€™s ambitious plans for Siri: It would integrate with apps, understand on-screen context, and give better answers.

And all of that is still coming later in iOS 18. But now we know whatā€™s coming after that. Hereā€™s the latest.

  • The revamped Siri - dubbed ā€œLLM Siriā€ - will leverage new Apple AI models to interact more like a human would.

  • These new in-house models will also allow ā€ŒSiriā€Œ to perform more complex tasks, which Apple has to rely on ChatGPT for in iOS 18.2.

  • And App Intents will be improved to allow for more precise control of third-party apps.

  • Apple is currently testing the new ā€ŒSiriā€Œ in a separate app, but it will eventually replace the current version of ā€ŒSiriā€Œ.

When is ā€˜LLM Siriā€™ Coming?

  • Apple is expected to announce LLM Siri next year, as part of the upcoming iOS 19 and macOS 16 software updates.

  • But as we saw with Apple Intelligence, the new features wonā€™t be available immediately in next yearā€™s iPhone 17 lineup.

  • Instead, Apple will release the new Siri later - as early as Spring 2026.

So, Whatā€™s Coming in iOS 18?

  • On-screen awareness will be coming in a future iOS 18 update. This allows Siriā€Œ to understand and take action with content shown on-screen. For example: if a friend texts a user their new address in Messages, the receiver can say, "Add this address to his contact card."

  • Personal Context. Siri will be able to pull data from Photos, Calendar, Messages, etc. to help craft responses to queries. For example: if you ask ā€œWhen is Momā€™s flight landing?ā€ Siri will find the flight details and cross-reference them with real-time flight tracking to give an arrival time.

  • App Control. ā€Œā€ŒSiriā€Œ will be able toā€Œ control individual features in apps. For example, you could say, ā€œBring up that article about cicadas from my Reading List,ā€ or ā€œSend the photos from the barbecue on Saturday to Malia,ā€ and Siri will take care of it.ā€

  • And then with iOS 18.2, coming in just a few weeks, Apple has added a ChatGPT extension to answer any queries that Siri cannot answer.

  • Keep in mind, no features are being delayed here. The iOS 18 version of Siri uses first-generation Apple LLMs, and all of the features Apple announced at WWDC will be coming with iOS 18.

My take: Is Apple late to the party? Yes. But when are they not?

I will gladly wait for a native, well-built, first-party experience from Apple. Especially if itā€™ll give me ChatGPT-like results without relying on a third-party service like ChatGPT!

And just to reiterate: Apple is not delaying anything here. This is just the next version of Apple Intelligence/Siri. Siri 3.0, if you will.

šŸ“ŗ A Real ā€˜Apple TVā€™

Adam Kenton

One of the longest-running rumors in the Apple world is the Apple Television. And now, itā€™s back on the table and more likely than ever! Hereā€™s the latest:

  • Apple is currently "evaluating" the idea of making an Apple-branded TV set as part of its smart home push.

  • And as we heard last week, Apple is planning to launch a smart home ā€œcommand centerā€ as early as March. This will be able to control all of your HomeKit devices and run its own operating system.

  • Apple already has home speakers (HomePod), a successful TV service (Apple TV+), and theyā€™re working on a smart home camera for 2026. So, an Apple-branded TV makes a lot more sense now than it ever has.

  • With Appleā€™s innovation in display tech combined with how small theyā€™re able to make devices now (M4 Mac mini), I donā€™t think itā€™ll be a challenge for them to shrink the size of the Apple TV box into a thin TV screen.

  • However, since Apple is still evaluating the idea, the odds of us seeing an Apple-branded television within the next 5 years are slim.

Fresh Software Updates

  • On Monday, Apple released iOS 18.1.1 (and macOS 15.1.1) to patch some security vulnerabilities. Nothing else, just security patches. Here are more details.

  • For those on the Beta train, Apple released iOS 18.2 Beta 4 on Wednesday with some additional changes.

  • tvOS 18.2 Beta 3 also launched and it added the long-awaited Snoopy screensavers!

  • watchOS 11.2 Beta 3 contains a new ā€œAll Rings Closedā€ activity award for Apple Watch.

  • Weā€™re expecting iOS 18.2, macOS 15.2, and the other software updates to roll out to the public within the first two weeks of December.

My take: I donā€™t think thereā€™s ever been a more fitting decade to launch an Apple-branded TV. Appleā€™s trend of making products thin, combined with their constant display tech improvements, and Apple TV+ success makes this seemā€¦ believable. Unlike it was 10 years ago when it was being rumored.

Appleā€™s push into the smart home market is just starting, though, so I donā€™t expect this to come until Apple has already found success with their upcoming Amazon Echo-like device and home security cameras. That could be at least 5-7 years away.
